Gestalt-class drones do not receive commands from the mothership. They appear to know what the mothership intends before it communicates. Voidborn engineers explain this as "emergent coordination through shared substrate" — a phrase that has generated more academic papers than answers. The drones' behavior in combat is described by other empires as "unsettlingly organic," moving as schools of fish or flocks of birds rather than as independent units receiving instructions.
