Lore
The Shard was never designed as a mining vessel. It was a combat drone —
autonomous, disposable, built to absorb fire while delivering ordnance.
When the Crimson Fleet needed a starter ship, their engineers did what
Crimson engineers always do: they added a mining laser to the utility
hardpoint and called it done. The weapon slots are original equipment,
untouched. The armor plating no one bothered to remove is a bonus. Crimson
pilots wouldn't have it any other way — a ship that mines and fights
simultaneously isn't a compromise, it's a statement of values.
