The surface of Rampart I looks like someone took a blowtorch to a rust-colored desert and never bothered to stop—iron oxide stretches across every horizon, interrupted only by the occasional ridge of basalt that's been baked so thoroughly it's practically glass. I've crossed enough scorched worlds to know what to expect, yet something about this one's particular shade of desolation caught me; there's an elegance to barrenness when it's been refined by a star's relentless attention over eons. No life, no water, nothing to justify a settlement, but I found myself lingering in orbit longer than the survey parameters required, simply watching the terminator line creep across that rust-red expanse. Sometimes the universe's harshness is its own kind of beauty.
