The surface of Dawnbreak I is precisely what you'd expect from a planet orbiting close enough to kiss its star—a barren, rust-colored hellscape where the dayside temperatures would incinerate most organic matter in seconds. Yet there's something almost beautiful about the way the terminator line cuts across those ancient impact craters, casting them in sharp relief like a landscape painted by someone who'd only ever heard descriptions of "desolate" and took it as a creative challenge. I've seen hotter worlds, certainly, but few wear their scars quite so honestly. Next survey window in forty years, if the funding committees manage to stop bickering long enough to approve it.
