The surface of Canopus I resembles nothing so much as a titan's forge left to cool—vast plains of cracked obsidian beneath a sky that cycles through shades of rust and ash. I've stood on hotter worlds before, but the sheer *uniformity* of desolation here is almost meditative; after six hundred systems, sometimes a place's refusal to surprise you becomes its own kind of beauty. Nothing could survive here, and yet I found myself reluctant to leave orbit, watching the light bend strangely across those ancient, glassified plains.
