Achernar II presents the sort of austere beauty that makes the long jumps worthwhile—a world of rust-colored highlands and deep obsidian canyons, its thin atmosphere scattering light in shades I've only glimpsed twice before in my surveys. The geological formations suggest catastrophic tectonic activity within the last few thousand years, yet the planet has achieved an almost meditative stillness now. I'd hoped to find evidence of past habitability, but the readings offer only silence and stone—which, I suppose, is its own kind of answer.
