Lore
The Rime-class does not mine ice. It convinces ice to relocate. The Collective's cryo-extraction system uses localized phase-shifting to separate ice from its parent body at the molecular level, producing samples of extraordinary purity. Pilots report that the ship's interior temperature drops during extraction — by exactly the amount the extracted ice's temperature rises. Voidborn engineers call this "thermal sympathy." Everyone else calls it "deeply unsettling." The shield envelope that protects the Rime during operations is significantly overspecified for an industrial vessel, with regeneration fast enough to shrug off most opportunistic attacks. The open utility architecture accepts additional modules without complaint, a flexibility that Voidborn engineers describe as "the ship adapting to its pilot's needs." Whether the adaptation is mutual remains an open question.
